Scott Mayer

Corporate veteran turned educator and teacher. I received my Master of Arts in Teaching degree with an endorsement in History from Concordia University Chicago earlier this summer. I completed my Student Teaching term at Stevenson High School during the spring '25 semester, teaching US History & Economics. Series 7 and Series 66 certified (FINRA), Certified Personal Trainer (NASM). I graduated from the University of Illinois @Urbana-Champaign in 2010 with a Bachelor's Degree in History, and I graduated from Glenbrook North High School in 2006. Over the next 9 months I will be pursuing my LBS-1 endorsement to become a special education teacher and case manager.

As was the case for many, Covid was a turning point both personally and professionally, and I started thinking about a major career change. I began the journey towards becoming a teacher in January 2023 and haven't looked back. The last two and a half years working for District 225 while pursuing my degree and license have been some of the greatest years of my life. I have loved every minute in the classroom, at the scorer's table, on the cross-country course and on school-sponsored service trips. I am very excited for what the future holds.

Habitat for Humanity Summer Practicum

For the past several summers I have accompanied a group of combined Glenbrook North and Glenbrook South students on service trips to Manistique, MI to volunteer at the local Habitat for Humanity affiliate. Students paint houses, build porches, install windows, construct ramps and sheds, clean garages and yards, etc. They work hand in hand not just with each other, but other community members and volunteers.

There are three lessons taught each trip focusing on service and self-development. The students receive one summer school credit. In addition to working at the affiliate, we take day trips to various landmarks in the area, including Pictured Rocks up in Lake Superior.

Assistant Boys Cross Country Coach

Starting in Fall 2025, I will be an assistant cross country coach for Glenbrook North's boys team. I ran for this program during my tenure at GBN (2002-2005) and couldn't be more excited to help lead this generation of quality student-athletes.

Athletics Timer / Scorekeeper

In the evenings and on certain Saturdays, I work as a timer and scorekeeper for a variety of IHSA athletic events at Glenbrook North High School including football, cross-country, volleyball, swimming, diving, basketball, track and field, water polo, lacrosse, and softball.

Previous Life

Professional Life Before Teaching

Marketing / Advertising

Upon graduating college, I worked in the Marketing and Advertising industries, both for clients and ad agencies alike. Some of the brands I worked on include Crest, Blue Bunny, Maytag and Whirlpool. My focus was in digital and email marketing, creating campaigns that brought in customers from all corners of the internet. During Covid I decided I wanted to switch careers, as I wasn't feeling fulfilled at work.

Finance - Romano Wealth Management

Prior to starting in education, I worked for a financial firm in Evanston, IL for 16 months - my first stop in finding my new career. While I engaged with the marketing department to get the word out about the firm, I began working towards becoming a financial advisor, successfully doing so once passing the Series 7 and Series 66 Licensing Exams. The firm specializes in providing financial advice to individuals with varied financial backgrounds.

In Fitness And In Health

What started as a hobby to keep my creative mind occupied eventually grew into a full-fledged fitness blog with nearly 10,000 subscribers. While I haven't posted in a while, the blog is still up and active, receiving many thousands of reads per month on popular blogging platform Medium. I even became a certified personal trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine.
